Automatic Chemical Dosing
Automatic dosing of pool sanitisers can be achieved by either of the following methods:
- Erosion tablet feeders
- Electrolytic salt chlorinators
- Liquid feeders.
Erosion Feeders
Erosion feeders can simply be a floating container where chlorine or bromine tablets dissolve and pass the sanitiser into the pool water. Some of these devices have the ability to control rate of feed. Other Erosion feeders are larger containment vessels that are installed on-line or off-line in the return line plumbing. Water flow is controlled either electronically or manually through the device.
Liquid Feeders
Safety – Never mix chemicals and never mix chlorine types.
Liquid Chemicals feeders operate by drawing the solution from a reservoir and pumping it into a plumbing site of the pools filtration system. Common pumping mechanisms are Peristaltic pumps, Diaphragm pumps and Venturi systems controlled by a solenoid valve. These pumps may feed at a fixed predetermined rate or be controlled by sophisticated feedback systems which monitor the water at regular intervals.
Automated Chemical dosing is primarily used to control the sanitiser and pH levels in pools. Liquid Chlorine (Sodium Hypochlorite) is a common sanitiser that is used with automated feed systems. Hydrochloric Acid is a common pH control liquid used with automated feed systems.
CO2 gas is commonly used to control pH level in commercial pools. An analyser will test the water and when it determines that the pool requires a reduction in pH, a solenoid valve will open for a predetermined period to inject the water stream with CO2.
The ability to control automatic chemical dosing equipment is what makes them so versatile.
Below are two common technologies available that test the water, interpret the results and initiate the dosing equipment.
Probe Systems
Redox and pH probe systems have been around for a long time and have had limited success in the domestic pool market where constant maintenance of the probes is required. When in contact with the water stream, these probes emit small electrical signals that correspond to the sanitiser or pH level in the water.
Photometer
Photometric systems are the best and most accurate of the water analysis systems. They use specific reagents and wavelengths of light to measure a range of water parameters in a mixed sample of water.
Up until recently, these systems have only be available for commercial pools because of the high cost. Thankfully, Puresilk has developed patented technology that greatly lowers the cost of photometric technology so that it can be used in the domestic pool market. The new technology does not compromise on quality or analytical accuracy and requires little to no maintenance.
